Volunteer Attorneys Successfully Helps Marine with a Landlord/Tenant SCRA Matter
A Marine signed a residential lease for an apartment but, several months later, the Marine was ordered to make a permanent change of station. The landlord was notified, and a request to remove the Marine from the lease, under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), was submitted via letter to the landlord. However, the landlord refused to terminate his lease, and brought suit in small claims court to seek rent for the remaining period of the lease, which was nearly $10,000. The Marine discussed this problem with a military legal assistance attorney, who referred this case to the ABA Military Pro Bono Project. The Project located a volunteer attorney who was able to resolve the matter with the landlord, who agreed to drop the claim.
