This Week’s Pro Bono Success Story
A Marine staff sergeant had filed for divorce and custody in Oklahoma, but her husband opposed the divorce and the case dragged on. In the meantime, the Marine was stationed in Virginia, where she ultimately sought help from legal assistance to try to get the divorce case finalized. Legal assistance attempted to transfer the case to Virginia, but due to a variety of complications, was unsuccessful. This meant the Marine would need to finalize in Oklahoma. Unlike her husband who was represented by counsel, she could not afford an attorney – and without finalization of the divorce, she would not have formal custody or support ordered for her child. An Oklahoma attorney volunteered through the Military Pro Bono Project to represent the Marine through finalization of the divorce, which included an order of custody and wage assignment for child support in favor of the Marine.
