This Week’s Pro Bono Success Story

April 13, 2010

An Air Force servicemember and his wife in San Antonio, Texas, were caring for his wife’s 14 year-old cousin because the child’s father is deceased and his mother is a homeless drug addict. The military couple had not obtained any formal order of custody for the child. The servicemember was ordered to PCS to Germany, which meant that the couple would need to formally gain custody of the child in order to bring him along as they relocated. The Military Pro Bono Project found an attorney willing to represent the family in a guardianship proceeding pro bono, and as a result the child was able to get a passport and remain in the care of the family as it moved to Germany.
