This Week’s Pro Bono Success Story

An Air Force servicemember received orders to transfer from Illinois to Washington, D.C., and so she terminated the lease on her apartment in accordance with her rights under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. Following her relocation, her former landlord failed to return her security deposit as required by Illinois law. Despite efforts by the servicemember’s JAG to recover the deposit—including sending demand letters on her Pentagon letterhead—the landlord was unresponsive. A Chicago volunteer attorney with the Military Pro Bono Project sent a demand to the landlord on behalf of the servicemember, and within a week the servicemember received a check from the landlord for double the deposit amount, plus interest.
