This Week’s Pro Bono Success Story
September 1, 2010
During a swim qualification event, a Marine sergeant was knocked unconscious while underwater and was left in a coma. He had not executed a power of attorney or advanced health care directive prior to his injury, leaving his pregnant wife unable to exercise the full range of authority over his health care and other matters that she desperately needed. The Military Pro Bono Project located an attorney in Virginia who agreed to represent the Marine’s wife in a conservatorship action over her husband for no fee. The attorney further agreed to volunteer to handle subsequent, court-required review hearings at no cost to the Marine’s wife, and she is now able to manage all aspects of his care.
