Volunteer Attorney Reaches Favorable Settlement for Landlord/Tenant Dispute
March 28, 2013
After a Navy servicemember was ordered to deploy, she gave oral notice to her landlord about her upcoming deployment and that, accordingly, she needed to terminate her lease. The landlord confirmed the deployment with the sailor’s command and then agreed to terminate the lease. However, after the sailor returned from her deployment, she was served with notice of a lawsuit for thousands of dollars for rent while she was deployed. This case was referred to the ABA Military Pro Bono Project, which located an attorney who offered pro bono help. The attorney worked with the sailor’s former landlord and successfully received a favorable settlement for the sailor.
