Volunteer Attorney Helps Marine Quickly Resolve an Identity Theft Matter
June 12, 2013
After a young Marine’s wages and bank account were garnished, he discovered that a relative used his social security number to take out a student loan when the Marine was a young child, and the fraudulent loan was never repaid. For months, the Marine attempted to have his money and wages returned to him by communicating with the original lender and debt collection agency. His attempts were unsuccessful, so the Marine visited a military legal assistance attorney, who referred his case to the ABA Military Pro Bono Project. The Project located a volunteer attorney, who, in short order, successfully negotiated the return of the thousands of dollars that had been wrongfully taken from the Marine.
