Marine’s Tax Obligations for Military Fundraising Account Fully Forgiven Thanks to Attorney’s Help
October 5, 2020
A Marine servicemember wanted to help fundraise for a Navy Medical Training Support Center. To do this, he opened a bank account so he could store the money raised. The following year, while stationed overseas, he was notified by the IRS that he owed taxes on this account, although the money in the account belonged only to the Navy Medical Training Support Center. The Marine visited his legal assistance office for assistance with this tax issues. His legal assistance attorney referred his case to the Project, which placed the case with an experienced tax attorney. The pro bono attorney worked with the IRS, and the Marine’s tax obligations were completely forgiven.
