Marine Sued by HOA for Unpaid Fees Settles Lawsuit in his Favor with Attorney’s Help
December 8, 2020
A Marine Corps servicemember was sued by his homeowners’ association (“HOA”) for unpaid fees after moving out of his home. He had paid all fees due to the HOA at the time he moved out of the previous home, and the complaint did not specify what fees he owed. The Marine visited his local legal assistance office for help, and his legal assistance attorney referred his case to the ABA Military Pro Bono Project. The Project connected the Marine with a pro bono attorney. The volunteer attorney negotiated with the HOA, which eventually agreed to dismiss the case against the Marine with prejudice, and he was not required to pay any of the fees.
