After a Marine Discovered His Identity Was Stolen, Attorney Helped Clear His Record and Protect His Military Career

January 8, 2021

A Marine discovered that, while he was a child, his social security number was used by a relative to obtain loans. The past due accounts and loans were discovered during the Marine’s standard security clearance investigation. Because of this problem, the servicemember’s career with the Marine Corps was at risk. He visited his local legal assistance office, which referred his case to the ABA Military Pro Bono Project. The Project placed his case with a volunteer attorney.

The attorney contacted the family member as well as the credit agencies to begin resolving the problem. The attorney also provided the Marine with the information he would need to finish up clearing his record, and protect his career with the Marine Corps.
