Volunteer Attorney Helps Sailor Receive Favorable Settlement with Student Loan Creditor

September 29, 2021

A Navy servicemember co-signed on his girlfriend’s student loan, in reliance that she would pay back the loan entirely. After the couple broke up, the sailor’s then-ex-girlfriend, defaulted on her student loan payments, and stopped responding to the sailor’s communications. The missed payments were reported against the servicemember’s credit report, and his attempts to contact his ex-girlfriend were unsuccessful. He visited his local military legal assistance office for help. The sailor’s JAG attorney referred his case to the ABA Military Pro Bono Project, which connected him with a pro bono attorney. With the volunteer attorney’s help, the sailor and the creditor came to a favorable settlement agreement.
