After Death of Soldier’s Father, Attorney Ensured that Soldier Received Benefits to which he was Entitled
An Army servicemember was stationed abroad when he learned that his mother received death benefits for his deceased father’s passing, even though his mother and father were divorced at the time of his father’s passing, and as his father’s only child, he should have received any benefits. His mother also began probate proceedings, and the soldier wanted to ensure that any interest he had in the estate would be protected. He sought help from his military legal assistance office, which referred his case to the ABA Military Pro Bono Project. The Project promptly connected the soldier with an attorney.
The attorney negotiated with the soldier’s father’s former employer to ensure that he received the death benefits he was entitled to. The attorney also advised the soldier as to his rights related to the probate proceedings.
