Volunteer Attorney Successfully Helps Marine Victim of Identify Theft

July 18, 2012

A Marine visited a military legal assistance attorney with a concern about errors on his credit report. The Marine’s credit report had inaccuracies and errors that appeared to involve fraudulent loans taken out under the Marine’s name. This was of particular concern to the Marine because, without correcting his credit report, he could not obtain security clearance to re-enlist in his military occupational specialty. The Marine’s military legal assistance attorney referred this matter to the ABA Military Pro Bono Project, which placed this case with an attorney who offered to provide pro bono assistance. The volunteer attorney discovered that the Marine was a victim of identity theft. The volunteer attorney worked with the lenders involved with the matter and successfully cleared the Marine’s name from the fraudulent loans. The Marine was then able to obtain a security clearance, allowing him to re-enlist and continue to serve our country.
